NOTHING LIKE A KNISH

I am sometimes confused.
Confused/perplexed about much in life.

Doe it matter? I suppose it is in my blood. Slavic origins.

Knish. NO confusion there. They are on my Top 5 Favorite Foods List. No questions.

There are two distinct shapes (types) to knishes. There is the dumpling-round shape (NYC/uptown-style – usually baked) and the square (Coney Island Stye). I grew up on both.

When living in Queens, I preferred the Mets to the Yankees because... Shea Stadium had knishes. Yankee Stadium had no knishes.

When I would buy knishes from the street vendors in NY – they are primarily the square. I do not know if they even sell them on the streets anymore.

I consider the round to be "deli." The square to be street food.
I would never refuse either.

They are a meal in themselves. Half a lie. They are half-a-meal. To be satisfied, I believe you need to eat two.

Some people like to put mustard on them. Some opt for sour cream or horse radish. I am a purist. There are no condiments near my knishes.

The round tend to come in more flavors, well – fillings. Again... would never refuse any. Usuals ranged from potato, meat, mushroom, spinach, broccoli, cabbage and cheese. My staple (back in the day) were potato and kasha at Katz's on East Houston. It was about a ten minute walk to my grandfather's barber shop and apartment over on Canal.

Nowadays, I don't go down to NYC too often. But, I get a smile on my face and start to salivate when the bride brings the Gabila's home from BJs, Costco or Stop n' Shop. Some of our local New England Delis have them, too. Usually the round. Sometimes the square. Some things truly do not matter. When something is good, it is good – regardless of what it looks like.
I often wish life were that easy.
